What Is Night-Time Teeth Grinding or Sleep Bruxism?

Sleep bruxism is the involuntary grinding or clenching of teeth during sleep. It happens when the jaw muscles, mainly the masseter on the side of the jaw and the temporalis at the temple, contract rhythmically and repeatedly through the night. 

These episodes typically last a few seconds and can occur multiple times per hour, often generating significantly more force than ordinary chewing, which leads to progressive wear of the teeth over time. 

Around 8 to 10% of adults grind their teeth regularly during sleep, though the true number is likely higher since most people are never formally diagnosed. It affects men and women at roughly equal rates.

How Aromatherapy Can Help With Bruxism

In most cases, teeth grinding at night is linked to stress, anxiety, and accumulated muscle tension carried from the day into sleep. 

When stress and anxiety remain elevated throughout the day, the body carries that state into sleep through increased cortisol levels and ongoing activation of the stress response. This disrupts the transition into deeper sleep and increases the frequency of brief arousal events during the night. These arousals are closely linked to bursts of involuntary muscle activity, which is when clenching and grinding episodes are most likely to occur.

Where Aromatherapy Falls Short

The challenge with aromatherapy is that it doesn't stay effective for long. When a scent fills the room continuously, whether from a candle, scent diffuser, or pillow spray, the brain quickly adapts to it through a process called olfactory habituation. 

Within minutes, the same neural pathways that were initially responding to the scent start tuning it out, the same way you stop noticing your own perfume after a while. Once that happens, the calming effect the scent was providing fades, even though the smell is technically still there.

For scent to keep helping the nervous system stay calm through the night, especially during the kind of prolonged tension that contributes to bruxism, it needs to be delivered differently: in short, well-timed pulses rather than one continuous release. 

That keeps the signal fresh enough for the brain to keep responding to it, instead of filtering it out partway through the night, right when muscle tension and arousal events are most likely to occur.

Essential Oils That Help the Body Relax at Night 

Lavender

Lavender is the most extensively researched essential oil for anxiety and sleep. Its two primary active compounds, linalool and linalyl acetate, have been shown to interact with key receptors in the brain in ways that reduce stress, ease anxiety, and improve sleep quality. 

Vetiver 

Extracted from the roots of a grass native to India, vetiver has been used for centuries and is often referred to as the oil of tranquillity.

Its primary active compound is terpinen-4-ol, which is also found in tea tree oil, but in marjoram it acts very differently, functioning primarily as a nervous system regulator rather than an antimicrobial agent. Terpinen-4-ol directly stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system while simultaneously suppressing the sympathetic stress response that keeps the body in a state of tension.

Sandalwood

Sandalwood oil works primarily through alpha-santalol, a compound that has been shown to suppress central nervous system activity, reducing waking time and increasing the depth and duration of non-REM sleep

It lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and unlike most sedative substances, it does this without producing the kind of heaviness that impairs the quality of sleep itself, which is why it is often described as producing a grounded calm rather than drowsiness.

Frankincense 

Frankincense is derived from the resin of the Boswellia tree, native to regions like Somalia, Yemen, and Oman, and has been used for centuries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia for both medicinal and ritual purposes.
